Hatchet and/or long knife
This is an item as individual as the variety in militias. The Kentucky rank and file citizen/soldier armed himself with non descript frontier "cutlery". Bowie knives are too late a time period. We are looking for a hand forged hatchet or a cut-down sword. Long, mean, and not too sophisticated.
