Sources, articles and items of interest for 1812 militia companies

We welcome andy and all information which might reeinforce or bust traditional notions of what life was like in an early 19th century American militia company. This can be records of attendance to descriptions of the any and all militia regiments on the field during the war.

1812 era militia companies are often portrayed as "cookie cutter frontiersmen in walnut dyed linens or buckskin". There's no doubt that its a popular description of many operating as scouts, etc. Many in our organization feel that the image of the militiamen in living history reenactments and local historical pageants may be skewed. Its our opinion that when given the choice, most citizen soldiers would prefer a uniform. It was also evident that officers (especially after the early engagements), were keen to see all military units to perform, tactically ,along the lines of the armies of Napoleonic Europe.
